Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Lincoln Saltdogs ended the 2008 season on a high note, beating Wichita 10-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The win gives the Saltdogs 50 wins on the year, the third straight season that Lincoln has won at least 50 games.
The Saltdogs took the lead for good in the sixth inning. With the game tied at four and Wichita starter Richard Salazar (5-7) still on the mound, Lincoln put runners at the corners with one out for Dustin Yount. The 2008 Saltdogs Player of the Year ripped an RBI single to give Lincoln a 5-4 lead. Shawn McGill followed with an RBI single of his own, and three batters latter, Matt Maloney capped a four-run inning with a two-run single to left. Maloney added an RBI in the eighth, and Manny Rodriguez hit his first home run of the year in the ninth as Lincoln pulled away late.
The rally made a winner out of Saltdogs starter Brian Campbell (10-4), who reached double digits in wins for the first time in his young career. Lincoln held an early 2-0 lead after Rodriguez and Shea McFeely recorded first-inning RBIs, but Wichita scored once in the second and three more times in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Yount's two-run single tied the game in the fourth, however, with Campbell and four Lincoln relievers holding the Wingnuts hitless over the final six innings. Wichita did score a run without a hit in the seventh, but it was too little, too late.
On the night, Yount finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Maloney also drove in three runs, while Rodriguez went 3-for-6 with two RBI. Deacon Burns and Curt Miaso had three hits as well, with Albenis Machado and Luis Nieblas adding two hits apiece. Every Saltdog in the lineup had at least one hit, as Lincoln piled up 18 hits overall.
The Saltdogs close the season with a 50-45 overall record, and finish the second half at 29-19, tied with Sioux Falls for second place in the American Association North Division.
