Lincoln Stars News Release

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (20-28-4) dug themselves another early hole, falling 8-4 against the Waterloo Black Hawks (20-30-1) at Young Arena on Tuesday night.

Ryan O'Hara lit the lamp following lazy coverage from the Stars defense, potting his 14th goal of the season for the Black Hawks 1:10 in. Thirty-one seconds later, Kyler Kleven fired a tight-angle shot over the blocker-side of Aidan McCarthy for a 2-0 Waterloo lead.

Ryan Ouellette entered the game following Kleven's goal, but was victimized by an extremely odd bounce off the corner glass that sent the puck to the slot following a Black Hawk dump-in. Kleven was first to the puck and deposited it into the empty net at 5:49.

Lincoln pushed back with some great offensive chances, but Charlie Glockner stole the period for the Black Hawks, turning aside all 16 Stars shots. The visitors were down 3-0 after 20 minutes.

The home team kept charging in the second period as Max Sasson made it 4-0 at 2:09. Charlie Strobel potted a rebound at 5:22, increasing Waterloo's advantage to five.

Cole Craft finally got Lincoln onto the board, scoring his ninth goal of the season at 5:58. Gleb Veremyev and Noah Laba picked up the assists. O'Hara lit the lamp for the second time five minutes later, but Clay Hanus responded with his sixth goal in 2020-21 at 10:51. Chase Pietila and Dominic James collected helpers. James extended his point streak to seven games in the process.

Ethan Szmagaj restored Waterloo's five-goal lead near the end of the second period.

After 40 minutes, Lincoln trailed 7-2 and was outshot 20-10 by Waterloo in the middle frame. Veremyev and Nick Nardecchia scored for Lincoln in the third, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Jake Rozzi scored his first USHL goal for Waterloo with under two minutes in regulation as the cherry on top for the Black Hawks.

Lincoln was 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. Ouellette stopped 36 of 42 shots in relief while Glockner made 31 saves.
