Las Vegas Lights FC News Release


ghts FC kicked off the 2019 U.S. Open Cup on May 14 with a 2-0 victory over Coach Eric Wynalda's former team, Cal FC. The ghts advance to Round 3 on May 29, when they will host Orange County SC at Cashman Field. Major League Soccer's U.S.-based teams will enter the competition, which features a $300,000 first prize, in Round 4.

Prior to the game, The Easy as A-B-C Soccer Clinic, presented by ABC Hyundai, attracted 150+ kids and their families. ghts players Kevin Garcia Lopez, Eric Gonzalez and Gabe Robinson helped teach the sessions. ghts make "Welcome Home" memorable

Community events in the past two weeks are poignant reminders of how sports can be a platform to serve our community. ghts FC was honored to be a part of the surprise organized for two students at J. Tartan Elementary School with the return home of their father, Staff Sergeant Poncio. Get that box of tissues ready, you're going to need it. Walter Long Elementary School teacher Greg Winiewicz is a ghts fan for life after the team helped facilitate the SSSCU 2019 Teacher Appreciation Week car giveaway.

Greg was selected from 100+ CCSD teachers who were nominated by their principals. He's an art teacher whose previous vehicle was literally falling apart. The ghts staged a mock assembly with Angel Alvarez and Cash before SSSCU and CCSD officials brought in the car to surprise Greg. Special thanks to Silver State Schools Credit Union and Findlay Chevrolet for all they do to support local schools.

Good luck to all 16 teams competing in this weekend's Copa La Bonita! The tournament will be held at the ghts FC community fields at Cashman Field. The ghts FC community fields are presented by Select Physical Therapy and Findlay Volkswagen, and provide community organizations the chance to play on the best soccer field in the state of Nevada. Saturday, May 4th vs. Sacramento - Las Vegas surrendered an early goal but rallied for a 4-2 win over Sacramento Republic FC in front of 7,478 fans. Thanks to Jarritos, the official soft drink of ghts FC, 3,000 fans took home a "Luchador" cape!!

Saturday, May 11th vs. Colorado Springs - For the first time in team history, ghts FC went undefeated in five consecutive home games with a 3-0 win. We celebrated Mother's Day and Teacher Appreciation Week with Silver State Schools Credit Union and 7,023 fans on hand.

Tuesday, May 14th vs. Cal FC - Sammy Ochoa and Victor Rojas scored for the ghts in the 2-0 victory in the U.S. Open Cup. Fans were invited to sit anywhere in the stadium, including on the field.

Join us for Paws on the Pitch, presented by The Hydrant Club, on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. "Paws" tickets are $15 with a portion of the proceeds benefitting The Animal Foundation. Pets and their owners will be seated on the Grass Berm with a dedicated pet entrance behind the right field wall.

Next U.S. Open Cup Game: May 29 Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 29, when ghts FC will host Orange County in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., preceded by the Easy as A-B-C Soccer Clinic, presented by ABC Hyundai. All ghts season ticket holders will receive tickets to the match.
