Leyba Wins It with Bases Loaded Single in the Ninth

VISALIA, CA - The Cardiac Kids struck again on Monday night at Recreation Ballpark as the Rawhide (9-2, 9-2) inked another come-from-behind, walk-off win when SS Domingo Leyba knocked in the winning run with an infield single in the ninth to give Visalia a 5-4 victory over Stockton (5-6, 5-6).

RHP Lou Trivino (0-1, 3.68) allowed all four men he faced in the ninth to reach base, including the game winner by Leyba after allowing two runs to Visalia in the eighth inning that tied the game and set up the walk-off in the home half.

RHP Bo Takahashi (0-0, 1.80) made his California League and 2016 season debut on Monday night after arriving in Visalia earlier in the afternoon. The 19-year old righty from Brazil was outstanding after allowing one run in the top of the first on a LF Tyler Marincov RBI groundout. Following the run he gave up one hit and walked one and ended his evening retiring the final 12 batters he faced. Five innings and one run (earned) on three hits, a walk and four strikeouts was Takahashi's final line and he did not earn a decision.

RHP Daniel Gossett, listed as the 26th top prospect in the A's organization according to Baseball America, gave up a single tally in the first to Visalia after walking the lead-off man 1B Cody Regis. Regis moved to third on a CF Colin Bray single and scored on DH Rudy Flores sacrifice fly to right field to knot the score at 1-1.

Visalia took their first lead of the contest against RHP Joey Wagman in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out walk to Flores and an RBI double by 2B Henry Castillo gave the "Hide a 2-1 lead.

RHP Luis Ramirez came in the seventh after RHP Bud Jeter pitched a scoreless sixth frame. SS Mikey White greeted Ramirez rudely with a lead-off double. C Argenis Raga then singled him to third and DH B.J Boyd walked to load the bases. 2B Joe Bennie brought them all home with a double and the Ports took a 4-2 lead.

LHP Austin Wright (2-0, 0.00) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and the offense rewarded him in the home half.

Trivino served up a single to Leyba to begin the eighth inning and two batters later Castillo singled to centerfield. On the play CF James Harris muffed the ball and allowed it to get behind him and Leyba scored from first. Castillo scampered to second on the miscue and then advanced to third when the throw from the cut-off man Bennie went awry. LF Grant Heyman followed with an RBI single past the pulled in infield and that tied the game 4-4.

Wright made quick work of Stockton in the ninth retiring the Ports one, two, three. Trivino hit RF Ericson Leonora to begin the fateful ninth. Regis then reached on a broken bat single and Bray reach on an infield bunt single setting up the Leyba heroics.

Trivino took the loss for his one-plus innings of work, giving up six hit and three runs (two earned) with two strikeouts while Wright earned the win for his two shutout innings, allowing nothing but a hit batsman and recording one strikeout.

Due to the recent roster shuffles for Visalia a starter has not yet been named for game two against Stockton. The Ports will try and even the series with RHP Brett Graves (0-2, 9.35) on the mound. First pitch set for 6:00 p.m. from Recreation Ballpark.
