Modesto Ends Late-Night Thriller in 15

April 19, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A tightly contested affair between Bakersfield and Modesto featured a little bit of everything for nine innings despite a lack of runs. What the game lacked in offense, it was made up with drama.

Modesto overcame a Tyler Marlette 14th inning home run to not only tie it in the same inning, but also end it in the ensuing frame.

Isaac Sanchez's wild pitch scored Omar Carrizales and the Modesto Nuts took Game 1 of this three-game series, 3-2.

A contest that looked to be finishing two hours after it started slowly crept its way to and over the four hour mark. The official game time was 4 hours and 32 minutes and

Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:05pm.

The opener of this series saw two runs scored in the first three innings. Chantz Mack's two-out RBI single in the first brought home Austin Wilson, but Modesto tied it with a run of their own in the third.

Shane Hoelscher evened things up with an RBI single to score Max White and that would be it for quite a bit.

Both teams remained scoreless until Marlette socked his first homer of the season in the 14th inning to center field.

Looking to get three outs to wrap up the marathon, Isaac Sanchez couldn't lock things down.

Forrest Wall hit a sacrifice fly to center that gave Carrizales the opportunity to score from third.

Leading the 15th inning off, Dom Nunez drove a ball into right field for a single and that set the table for the fireworks. After a Drew Weeks sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch from Sanchez off the plate, Nunez found himself just 90 feet away from winning it.

Sanchez was able to strike out Collin Ferguson for the second out of the inning when Carrizalez came back up. Just as he did with Ferguson, Sanchez threw a pitch that appeared to skip just in front of home plate getting past Marlette and that led to Nunez sprinting his way home and ending the drama.

It was the fifth extra innings game for the Blaze this season with their record now falling to 2-5 in one-run stints.
