Lewis and Morales Lift Aviators to 4-1 Win

August 8, 2007 - American Association (AA) - Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

The two Aviators who produced walkoff wins in the last week against Shreveport combined forces to do in the Pensacola Pelicans and end a 2 game slide for Coastal Bend. Will Lewis and Stephen Morales each hit homeruns and Pedro Flores was brilliant for eight innings as the Aviators won 4-1.

Pelicans right fielder Bo Brown homered to left field in the third to give Pensacola a lead before Lewis, who had gone deep three times in the last seven games, tied the game at 1. The blast to left field was his fourth of the year. Pelicans starter Colin Young also pitched well, going seven innings and allowing just one run. In the home half of the eighth reliever Carl Schaefer came on for Pensacola and saw his defense let him down. Brian Fryer reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and advanced to second when the ball went into the dugout. James Lofton's liner off the pitcher's glove got Fryer caught in a rundown between second and third and he was tagged out. Lofton alertly kept running to second during the play leaving a runner in scoring position with just one out. Bryon Smith flied to right field and Lofton tagged to advance to third. Brown's throw was offline and got past third baseman Trino Aguilar which allowed Lofton to score and put the Aviators in front 2-1. DH Grant Richardson then drew a walk to bring Morales to the plate. He crushed his seventh big fly of the year well into the brush behind the left field wall for a 4-1 Coastal Bend advantage.

Protecting a 3 run cushion, the Aviators handed the ball to closer Tom Atlee who retired the Pelicans in order for his 16th save of the season. With the win Flores improves to 5-6 while Young drops to 6-3. Coastal Bend moves into third place in the South Division standings with the win and trail first place Fort Worth by just four in the loss column. The four game series with Pensacola will conclude tomorrow with first pitch at 7:05 pm. The game can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM and online at aviatorsbaseball.com.
