Cleveland Charge News Release


As part of the 2011 NBA Development League Week of Service (November 14th-23rd), the Charge players and Head Coach Alex Jensen touched the lives of families across the Canton area in time for the holiday season. The team participated in a variety of hands-on service projects which encouraged volunteerism and generated awareness about the importance of community service.

"The Week of Service was a great way to introduce the community members to the NBA D-League and Canton Charge culture of giving back and making a difference." said Canton Charge GM Wes Wilcox. "The Charge looks forward to not only playing basketball here in Canton, but also making a positive impact in the community and the lives of the great people of this city."

Canton Charge Week of Service Events Included:

Tuesday, November 15th - Refuge of Hope Dinner

Coach Jensen, Assistant Coach Thomas Scott and Charge players forward Jonathan Blake, forward/center Marcus Hubbard, forward Jamine Peterson and forward Marcus Relphorde stepped off the hardwood and into the kitchen to join forces with local volunteers to feed 150 underserved community members at the Refuge of Hope. Families were served warm plates of meatloaf, green beans and macaroni-and-cheese and had an opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Charge.

Wednesday, November 16th - SPIRE Basketball Clinic

It was all hands on deck as the entire Charge team and coaching staff hosted a free Canton Charge Kids Clinic at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. In an hour-long clinic more than 45 children from the local community were schooled on the fundamentals of basketball: defense, dribbling, passing and shooting. After a motivating pep talk from the players, the spirited youngsters saluted the team with a thunderous "GO CHARGE!" for good luck in the inaugural 2011-12 season.

Friday, November 18th - "Long Haul Against Hunger" Donation Drive

Coach Jensen, Assistant Coach Ira Newble and forward Tyrell Biggs, guard T.J. Campbell, forward Travis Franklin, guard Antonio Graves, guard/forward Tyrone Kent, guard Keith McLeod and guard/forward Anthony Newell teamed up with local radio stations 98.1 WKDD, My 101.7, WRQK 106.9 and 640 WHLO for the "Long Haul Against Hunger", a day-long drive-by-and-donate event to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The stations broadcasted live from Thursday's Plaza in Belden Village as players and volunteers collected food donations from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additionally, the Canton Charge distributed tickets to anyone who made a donation between 4-6 p.m.
