Lerew And Crew Lift Revs To First Victory Of Season
April 25, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
Brandon Jones launched a historic home run and Anthony Lerew turned in a strong season debut as the York Revolution picked up their first win of the year with a 3-1 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Saturday night at Santander Stadium. The Revs even their record at 1-1, and will go for the series win on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, the Revs were still in search of their first lead of the season. Andres Perez launched a double off the Arch Nemesis with one out, and Bryan Pounds avoided an inning-ending strikeout by reaching first base on a wild pitch. The Revs took advantage of the extra opportunity as Jones cranked a three-run homer to right-center for the team's first home run of the season and the 1,000th in Santander Stadium history in regular season play.
Lerew (1-0) earned the win with five strong frames, allowing just one run on an RBI single by Jon Griffin in the top of the second.
A big turning point came in the third after singles by Evan Crawford and Bryan Sabatella sandwiched a walk to Dan Lyons, loading the bases for the Ducks with no outs. Lerew induced a 1-2-3 double play from Erik Komatsu, and made a slick play covering first base on a ground ball to first off the bat of Lew Ford to strand two in scoring position and keep it a 1-0 game at the time.
Following the Jones homer, Lerew slammed the door on his final frame by striking out the side in the fifth, finishing the night with six punch outs. The York staff totaled 10 strikeouts in the game, after whiffing 11 batters in the opener.
Lerew's victory in the second game of the season is the earliest by a Revs starter since Corey Thurman nabbed the Opening Night win in 2011.
Beau Vaughan, Stephen Penney, Mike DeMark, and Josh Judy all fired scoreless innings to finish the night with Judy claiming his first save.
Ducks starter Mark Rogers (0-1) took the loss, charged with all three York runs over five innings.
York lefty Logan Williamson will face Long Island's Ian Marshall in Sunday's series finale. It is also Soccer Night presented by Sara Lee. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
