Home Runs Keep Sugar Land Undefeated in 2-1 Win

Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS- A pair of home runs from Denny Almonte and Beamer Weems provided just enough offense to lift the Skeeters past Lancaster and remain perfect on the young season at 3-0. The bullpen for Sugar Land provided another 5.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts and three hits.

Cory VanAllen (W, 1-0) picked up the win after pitching the sixth. Adrian Martin earned his second save in as many nights after a perfect ninth. Sugar Land starter Matt Wright went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits. It was the first time Wright failed to record a strikeout in the right-hander's four years with the Skeeters.

P.J. Walters was saddled with the loss after surrendering a pair of leadoff home runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Lancaster pushed across the first run in the top of the third on a trio of singles off Skeeters' starter Matt Wright. Keith Castillo led off the frame with a single up the middle. After consecutive fly outs, Wright looked as if he would work out of the jam, but another single through the middle by Tyler Bortnick gave the Barnstormers a pair of runners on for Blake Gailen. Lancaster's centerfielder pulled a ball down the first base line that clipped Travis Scott's glove and ricocheted off the face of umpire before bouncing into right field, allowing Castillo to score from second and stake the Barnstormers a 1-0 lead.

Denny Almonte launched a big fly in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at one. The outfielder hit three long balls last season with the Skeeters after joining the club towards the end of the season.

Beamer Weems joined the home run parade in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff shot into left to give the Skeeters the first lead of the evening at 2-1. The Virginia Beach native holds the all-time home run record for a shortstop at Baylor.

Robbie Weinhardt escaped trouble in the top of the eighth after back-to-back singles opened up the inning. With a pair of runners on base, the former Detroit Tiger induced David Cooper to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and struck out Henry Wrigley to dance out of the jam.

Martin avoided drama in the ninth by retiring the side in order to slam the door for the save.

The Skeeters continue the eight-game homestand tomorrow in the series finale against Lancaster at 2:05 p.m. Gates will open at 1 p.m. Players will be available for autograph prior to the game (1-1:15) and children will be allowed to run the bases following the game. Season tickets and special game plans are still available for the 2015 campaign. Sign up today by calling the box office at 281-240-4487 to join the swarm.
