Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club and Siemens Canada are pleased to announce that they are accepting nominations for the 3rd Annual Leo Cahill Award for Coaching Excellence. The Leo Cahill Award is presented annually to a high school football coach within the Greater Toronto Area who best exhibits the drive and determination necessary to succeed both on and off the playing field. The award is a $10,000 bursary granted to the recipient's high school football program to ensure the long-term growth of that program.
New for 2006 is additional prizing for the coaches in second and third place. The first runner up will receive $2,500 of Fitness Equipment from Advantage Fitness Sales for the football program at that coach's school. The second runner up will see two Argonauts players attend a practice of that coach's high school football team. As well, nominations may now be submitted by any person connected to a worthy high school football coach. Players, school administrators, parents, and other family members may submit an entry on behalf of a coach they would like the committee to consider.
Last year, the grant was given to Dan Dominico from Northern Secondary School in Toronto. Coach Dominico has led the Northern Red Knights both on and off the field. A coach at Northern for 25 years, Dominico has been a TSSAA/TDSSAA Football convenor for over a decade and is the Director of the OFSAA Bowl Championship Series, as well as a colour commentator for CIS football games on Rogers Television. Dominico has spearheaded the Stop The Violence campaign at Northern and motivates his players both athletically and academically. Jeff Bertrand, a science teacher, football and basketball coach at Bramalea Secondary School in Brampton received the inaugural Leo Cahill Award.
Originally from Illinois, Leo Cahill was head coach of the Toronto Argonauts from 1967-1972 and then again in 1977-1978. He was General Manager of the Argonauts from 1986-1988. Under his leadership, the Argos went to the Grey Cup finals in 1971 and 1987. He recruited players including Joe Theisman, Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, Paul Warfield and current Toronto Argonaut Orlondo Steinauer. Leo also worked as a sports commentator and authored the book "Good Bye Argos" in 1972.
