Legends Take Second Straight in Greensboro, 5-2

The Lexington Legends made it two in a row over the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 5-2 win in Greensboro Sunday.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Freddie Hernandez singled. Steve Brown flied out, but Jeff Hulett followed with another single, sending Hernandez to second. Russ Dixon broke his bat, but grounded a single to right field to score Hernandez with the game's first run.

Lexington added two more in the third inning. With one out, Michael Diaz doubled to left field, and went to third on Brandon Wikoff's infield out. Brian Pellegrini grounded to shortstop, but Emilio Ontiveros threw wide of first, allowing Diaz to score as Pellegrini continued to second. Greensboro starter Sandy Rosario then threw a wild pitch on strike three to Hernandez. Catcher Jose Ceballos retrieved the ball and threw to first, but Hernandez beat the throw, and with home plate left uncovered, Pellegrini scored all the way from second to give Lexington a 3-0 lead.

The Legends increased the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. Albert Cartwright walked, stole second and came home when Brandon Wikoff's fly ball down the left field line fell for a triple after Ontiveros and third baseman Jake Smolinski collided while trying to make the catch. Pellegrini followed with a base hit to score Wikoff with the second run of the inning.

Greensboro scored its only runs in the bottom of the sixth. Paul Gran and Smolinski singled, and Ryan Keedy doubled to get the Grasshoppers on the board as Gran scored and Smolinski went to third. Ben Lasater's sacrifice fly brought Smolinski home to leave the score at 5-2.

Legends starter Kyle Greenwalt (8-12) worked the first six innings to get the victory. He allowed five hits and two runs while striking out one walking none. Kirkland Rivers pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and Kyle Godfrey picked up his first save of the year after working the eighth and ninth. Greensboro starter Sandy Rosario (2-1) was the losing pitcher.

The series concludes with a 7:05 p.m. game Monday night.
