Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Augusta, GA - In a game that saw a combined 36 hits and 27 runs, the Charleston RiverDogs held off a late Augusta GreenJackets charge to win 14-13 on Sunday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The GreenJackets lost despite an eight-run second inning that saw the Augusta send 11 hitters to the plate in an inning punctuated by Juan Perez's two-run home run.
Seven of the nine Augusta starters picked up multi-hit games, and all starters notched at least one base hit, with Charlie Culberson and Wendell Fairley picking up three apiece. One that didn't was Mike Loberg, but Loberg's one hit was his first triple of the year to score two runs.
The GreenJackets couldn't hold off a late-game RiverDogs charge, with Charleston tallying ten runs over the final five innings of the game. Six men scored in the top of the fifth to help the RiverDogs erase a 10-4 GreenJackets lead. Augusta led briefly in the bottom of the fifth on Francisco Peguero's sacrifice fly but Charleston tied the game in the sixth on Addison Maruszak's RBI single and took the lead for good with a three-run seventh inning. All three RiverDogs hits in the seventh were good for extra bases.
Charleston's top three hitters (Jose Pirela, Abraham Almonte and Corban Joseph) were a combined 11-17 and knocked in eight runs.
The Jackets sent eight to the plate in the ninth and scored twice to make it a one-run game. Fairley's sacrifice fly and Josh Mazzola's bases-loaded walk put the GreenJackets back in business with the bases loaded and the tying run at third. Andy D'Alessio - in search of his third hit of the night - bounced out to shortstop to end the contest.
Neither starter factored in the decision and both had hit the showers by the third inning. Orlando Yntema yielded four runs and seven hits in 1.1 innings while his counterpart Cory Arbiso surrendered eight runs on seven hits - all in the second inning.
Manny Banuelos (9-5) earned the win for Charleston with his two scoreless innings of one-run baseball while Bryan Millikan (0-1) takes the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in an inning pitched.
With the series evened at one, the GreenJackets will send Eric Surkamp (9-5, 3.61) to the mound as the Jackets attempt to take two of three from the âDogs and finish the homestand with a 4-2 record. Charleston will counter with Trent Lare (2-3, 3.32) in the series and homestand finale. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
