Lexington Legends News Release
On Hispanic Night at Applebee's Park, the Legends, in the midst of a six-game skid, said "no mas." Stellar pitching shut down the Intimidators, as Tip Fairchild picked up his league-leading 10th win. Sammy Gervacio finished off Kannapolis with some tough defense to earn his seventh save of the season and cap off the 3-1 victory.
Kannapolis took an early 1-0 lead in the second. Francisco Hernandez doubled with one out then scored on an Anderson Gomes single.
The Legends tied it up in the bottom of the third as Nathan Warrick smacked a double to center field. Warrick advanced to third on Wladimir Sutil's single. A shallow sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Koby Clemens plated Warrick.
Fairchild did some intimidating of his own in the fifth, striking out the side. He tossed seven innings and struck out eight.
Lexington turned up the heat on the offensive side in the bottom of the inning, adding another run. Sutil walked to get things going again for the Legends. After Sutil stole second, Clemens grounded the ball just out of the third baseman's reach for a double, scoring Sutil to make it 2-1.
Gervacio came in to relieve Fairchild in the eighth and brought a little defense to back-up his pitching. With one out, Paulo Orlando looked to drop one just inside the left-field line, but Gervacio made a diving grab for the out. The next batter grounded one straight back to the mound and Gervacio made the quick grab and toss to first to end the inning. Gervacio retired all six batters he faced.
The Legends got an insurance run in the eighth as Sutil sparked the offense again with a lead-off bunt single. With Sutil at second thanks to Clemens' sacrifice bunt, Mark Ori was hit by a pitch. Eli Iorg grounded to third, but Ori's slide into second broke up the routine double play. Kannapolis second baseman Brandon Johnson threw the ball into the dugout, allowing Sutil to cross the plate for the 3-1 win.
With the series split at 1-1, the two teams will battle again Thursday night. Brian Bogusevic makes his return to the Legends after a short stint with Tri-city and will face Noe Rodriguez. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
