Augusta scores 15 unanswered runs after rain delay at L.P. Frans

The Augusta GreenJackets trailed the Hickory Crawdads 1-0 after one inning at L.P. Frans Stadium Wednesday night. A 48 minute rain delay halted action before the start of inning two. After the rain delay, Augusta scored 15 unanswered runs and beat the ‘Dads 16-2 in front of 1,518 fans.

Hickory got on the board in the first against Augusta starter Dave McKae. With two outs and a runner at first base, Hickory DH Mike McCuision singled home 2B Cameron Blair. McKae settled down and did not allow another hit until the seventh inning. Crawdad LF Jason Delaney homered off of McKae with two gone in the eighth.

The GreenJacket right hander allowed two runs on four hits in eight innings. McKae (3-1) stuck out seven and walked just one in the winning effort.

Augusta scored four times in the second inning against Hickory starter Todd Redmond. GreenJacket catcher Barry Gunther singled home 2B Eugenio Velez to tie the game at one. The ‘Dads committed two errors in the inning leading to three more Augusta runs.

In the third, Velez led off with a double against Redmond and Gunther smashed a two run homer to make it 6-1. Augusta added one more in the third to take a 7-1 lead and tallied once in the sixth to go up 8-1.

Redmond (6-5) allowed seven runs (four earned) on ten hits in four innings to take the loss. Crawdad reliever Derek Antelo gave up one run in two innings on two hits.

In the seventh, Augusta got seven runs against Crawdad righty Romulo Sanchez. He faced eight batters, seven reached and all scored. Velez's RBI single ended the night for Sanchez. Velez finished the game with four hits and three runs scored. Augusta LF Ben Copeland had a hit and scored a run in the inning, one of three hits and three runs scored by the GreenJacket leadoff hitter.

Augusta 3B David Maroul hit a homerun off of Hickory reliever Jean Garavito in the eighth inning. Maroul reached base four times, scored twice and drove in two. Gunther had two hits, two runs scored and three knocked in for the Jackets.

The two teams play the third of four games at 7pm Thursday night. Crawdad southpaw Brian Holliday meets Augusta right hander Joe Martinez.
