Columbus stays hot with 9-8 win over Charleston

Columbus, GA - It took 3 hours and 41 minutes, but the Columbus Catfish (8-6) knocked off the Charleston RiverDogs (6-8) by a score of 9-8 Wednesday at Golden Park. The teams combined for 20 hits and 20 walks in the back-and-forth game but the Catfish scored five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and held off the RiverDogs for the win.

The first Columbus run scored in the second inning when C Juan Apodaca grounded out to drive in 1B David Sutherland, making it 2-1 in favor of Charleston. The RiverDogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Catfish responded in the bottom of the inning with three of their own. 2B Travis Denker led off with his third home run of the season. LF Lucas May later scored on a passed ball and 2B Shane Justis drove the fourth Columbus run with a ground out that scored May.

Charleston made it 8-4 with one run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Columbus took over the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. SS Ivan DeJesus batted in May with a sacrifice fly that made it 8-5 with two outs in the inning. The rally continued with an RBI single by Justis. RF Sergio Pedroza then hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 8-8. Pedroza now leads the SAL with 18 home runs and 69 RBI. Columbus took a 9-8 lead with a one-run single by Sutherland.

The Catfish shut out the RiverDogs for the last three innings for their seventh win in the last nine games. LHP Kale Garrison pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get to RHP Matt Gomez de Segura, who got a ground out to end the game with the potential winning runs in scoring position.

RHP Arismendy Castillo (6-1) gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings and picked up the win. Gomez de Segura earned his third save. RHP Jim Conroy (2-4) allowed two runs in 1/3 inning and suffered the loss.
