Lake County Captains News Release
(Lexington, KY)--The Lexington Legends are making a a habit of late rallies against the Lake County Captains.
For the third straight game, the Legends came alive in the eighth inning Wednesday, scoring three times to break a tie game open and capture a 6-3 win over the Captains at Applebee's Park.
The loss was the third in a row for the Captains (29-24), who fell to 4 1/2 game behind first place Hagerstown, who beat Lakewood 7-3. The Captains have 17 games left in the first-half race.
The Legends (32-20) have won six of the seven games played against Lake County this season.
After losing leads in the eighth inning on Monday and Tuesday, lightning struck for the third time Wednesday. With the score 3-3, Hunter Pence reached on an error by third baseman Chris Gimenez. Justin Humphries was then hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt, putting runners at first and second. Captains manager argued the call with home plate umpire Mike Jarboe, contending that the ball was fouled.
The next hitter, Mitch Einertson, bunted to first baseman Fernando Pacheco, who threw too late to third, leaving the bases loaded with no one out.
Lexington's Chris Clark then stroked a two-run single off Scott Roehl to make it 5-3. After Beau Torbert popped out, Sarbaugh made a visit to the mound to visit with Roehl and the infielders. As he left the mound, Sarbaugh made a comment to Jarboe, who ejected the the Captains manager. After a brief delay while Sarbaugh protested the ejection, the Legends' Frankie Caraballo followed with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 6-3.
It was the first ejection of the season for the first-year Captains skipper.
Enyelbert Soto (2-1) earned the win in relief after striking out Mike Butia in the eighth with runners at second and third. Miami University alum Chad Reineke worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save.
After falling behind 2-0 on Pence's homer in the first inning, the Captains tied it in the third on back-to-back homers by Chris Gimenez and Juan Valdes.
The Captains will play the wrap-up of the series and road trip on Thursday night at 7:05 (WELW AM 1330).
