(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Michael Antonio's two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a three-run rally, and the Lexington Legends held on to beat the Asheville Tourists 4-3 Tuesday night.
The win was the Legends' fourth straight, and improved their season record to 24-21. The Legends are tied for fifth place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, but are just two and one-half games behind first-place Charleston.
Asheville took the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Michael Ramirez grounded to third base, but Antonio's throw to first got past Fred Ford, who was charged with an error. Ramirez continued to second and then to third when second baseman Yowill Espinal's throw went into left field. Ramirez scored on a sacrifice fly by Juan Ciriaco.
Espinal evened the score in the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season, but the Tourists moved in front with two runs in the fourth. With two outs, Dillon Thomas reached on an error by Antonio at third. Thomas stole second and scored on a triple by Matt Argyropoulos. Ramirez followed with a double, scoring Argyropoulos, and the Tourists had a 3-1 lead.
That margin held up until the eighth. Ethan Chapman and Espinal started the inning with singles, and Terrance Gore's sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Raul Mondesi struck out for the second out, and the inning appeared to be over when Bubba Starling swung and missed on strike three. But the pitch was in the dirt and bounced away, and Chapman scored as Espinal moved to third and Starling reached first. Ford walked to load the bases, and Antonio followed with a line drive hit to left, scoring Espinal and Starling and giving the Legends the lead.
Ali Williams, (3-2), who relieved starter Christian Binford in the seventh inning, picked up the win.
Alec Mills worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the ninth with a strikeout of Tom Murphy to end the game. Mills earned his seventh save.
Binford pitched the first six innings, and allowed five hits and three runs, all unearned.
Asheville reliever Rayan Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss.
The Legends have won the first two games of the series, which concludes Wednesday. Game time is 12:05 p.m.
