Legends, Power Split Doubleheader

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) L exington starter Colin Rodgers and reliever Mark Peterson teamed up for a seven-hit shutout as the Legends blanked the West Virginia Power 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader that drew 6,860 fans to Whitaker Bank Ballpark Saturday night.

Josh Bell's two-run homer in the seventh inning of the second game gave West Virginia a come-from-behind 4-3 victory.

The opening game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Nic Cuckovich walked, stole second and came home on a two-out single by Raul Mondesi.

The Legends added a run in the sixth on doubles by Bubba Starling and Jin-Ho Shin.

Rodgers (3-1) worked the first six innings and allowed six hits. He walked one batter and struck out six. Peterson picked up his fifth save with a scoreless seventh inning. Doubleheader games in the South Atlantic League are seven innings in length.

In the second game, the Legends took the lead with a run in the first inning. Terrance Gore singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by catcher Wyatt Mathisen and scored on a single by Bubba Starling. The steal was Gore's 19th of the year, tied for second in the South Atlantic League.

The Power tied the game in the second inning on a double by Walker Gourley, a ground out and a double by Ashley Ponce, but the Legends quickly regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Ethan Chapman singled, stole second, and came home on a single by Gore, who had three hits in the game. Gore scored from first when Raul Mondesi bounced a double over the head of Gourley, the first baseman, giving the Legends a 3-1 lead.

West Virginia cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on three walks and a ground out.

In the top of the seventh, Junior Sosa reached first on an error by Mondesi at shortstop, and Bell followed with a blast over the right field wall, putting the Power in front. Bell leads the South Atlantic League with 34 runs batted in.

Thomas Harlan (2-0), who relieved starter Jason Creasy at the start of the fourth inning, finished the game and allowed only one hit. He walked one batter and struck out four.

Lexington reliever Alec Mills (1-2) took the loss.

The Legends have won two out of three in the four-game series, which concludes Sunday. Game time is 1:35 p.m.
