Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Rome Braves scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-2 in front of 2,535 fans Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah catcher Kevin Plawecki doubled to extend his consecutive games on base streak to 21 straight.
The Braves (19-13) moved within a game of the Gnats (20-12) for first place in the Southern Division with the win.
The Braves began the winning rally with two outs and the bases empty in the eighth against reliever Beck Wheeler. Leadoff man Jose Peraza reached on an infield hit and stole second. Second baseman Levi Hyams followed with a slow bouncer up the middle that squirted off the glove of Savannah second baseman Yucarybert De La Cruz and into centerfield to bring home Peraza.
Savannah never led Friday. Twice the Braves scored single runs - in the first and fifth innings - and twice the Gnats scored a single run to tie - in the third and sixth innings. In the third, 1B Jayce Boyd doubled home De La Cruz to even the game at 1-1. In the sixth, Plawecki doubled up the left-center field gap to score Boyd to tie the game at 2-2.
Savannah starter Rainy Lara allowed two runs, one earned in seven innings with eight strikouts and no walks, but did not factor in the decision.
