Legends end streak with 9-4 win at Greensboro

The streak is over.

The Lexington Legends scored six runs in the second inning, added three more in the fourth and defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 9-4 Saturday night in Greensboro. The win ended the Legends' losing streak at 11 games.

Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Legends responded in the second. Freddie Hernandez singled, Steve Brown doubled and Michael Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

After Jeff Hulett flied out, Russ Dixon doubled, scoring Brown with the go-ahead run. Albert Cartwright singled Dixon to third, and Chris Jackson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brandon Wikoff delivered a two-run single to right field to make the score 4-1. Two more runs scored when third baseman Jake Smolinski could not field Brian Pellegrini's ground ball.

Greensboro answered with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-2, but the Legends extended the margin in the fourth. With one out, Wikoff doubled. Pellegrini reached first base when catcher Torre Langley was charged with a passed ball as Pellegrini swung at strike three. Wikoff took third on the pitch. Pellegrini was caught stealing, but Wikoff later scored on another passed ball to give Lexington a 7-2 lead. Hernandez and Brown followed with singles. Diaz' single scored Hernandez, and Brown, who was trying to advance to third, came home when Langley's throw went into left field for an error, making the score 9-2.

Greensboro added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but there was no further scoring.

David Duncan (3-3) worked the first five innings to get the win for Lexington. Greensboro starter Kyle Kaminska (8-9) was the losing pitcher.

The two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 4:05.
