Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads fell to the Asheville Tourists, 11-5, before 3,557 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night.
The Tourists (34-19, 60-62) moved ahead early with a pair of runs in the top of the first against RHP Wilmer Font on a miscue that scored one run and a sacrifice fly by 1B Michael Zuanich that brought in another.
The Crawdads (25-29, 58-65) came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Carlos Luna. CF Cody Podraza led off the inning with a single and scored later in the inning on an RBI double by RF Eric Fry. Fry moved to third on a LF Cristian Santana single and then scored on a DH Vinny DiFazio sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2.
After the Crawdads moved ahead with a run on an Asheville error in the bottom of the second, the Tourists came right back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it up again, 3-3, through four.
Asheville then retook a two-run lead in the top of the fifth. Font issued back-to-back walks, before giving way to RHP Jorge Quintero on the mound. Quintero gave up a two-run triple to DH Kiel Roling, but then got out of the inning with no further damage done.
Hickory, again, came right back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game. Santana extended the inning with a two-out single, before DiFazio clubbed a two-run homer, his second in three games with the Crawdads, to square the score, 5-5.
Quintero kept the tie intact with scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, but Asheville moved ahead with six runs (five earned) throughout the eighth and ninth innings against RHP Mark Hamburger (2-9), as the Tourists went on to win, 11-5. Hamburger was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while RHP Stephen Dodson (5-0), who pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, registered the win for Asheville.
