Late Rally Gives Jackets 4-2 Win Over Dogs
August 22, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA -In a see-saw battle, the Augusta GreenJackets tallied a pair of runs in the eighth inning to break a two-all tie and win 4-3 over the Charleston RiverDogs on Saturday night from Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Tied in the eighth with runners at the corners and no one out, Eliezer Zambrano's fielder's choice groundout to third scored Charlie Culberson to give Augusta the lead for good. Later in the inning, Wendell Fairley scored from second on a throwing error by Charleston shortstop Jose Pirela to give the Jackets a bigger cushion.
As has been the case so often since his return to the team a month ago, Francisco Peguero was one of the difference makers with 3-4 night to pace a Jackets attack that mounted just seven hits.
Aaron King was on the money through the first five innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth before losing it on Melky Mesa's one-out bloop single. The lefty fired 5.2 innings of one-hit baseball, charged with the run when Corban Joseph - who walked before the Mesa single - scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one. King walked a season-high six but fanned six RiverDogs hitters.
The GreenJackets took a third inning lead on Josh Mazzola's RBI groundout to push his South Atlantic League leading total to 89. Mazzola was again the catalyst when the Jackets reclaimed the lead in the sixth, leading off with a double to right-center and coming around to score with one out on Juan Perez's bloop hit. Charleston struck back, evening things in the seventh on Abraham Almonte's two-out single to left-center, scoring the tying run seconds before the final out was recorded at third base.
Edwin Quirarte (6-1) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning in front of Chris Wilson, who slammed the door shut with a scoreless ninth to pick up his sixth save of the year. Dan Kapala (6-1) fired two innings in relief of RiverDogs starter Brandon Braboy to take the loss, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
The Jackets will look for their second straight series win, sending Orlando Yntema (0-2, 5.40) to the mound on Sunday to face Cory Arbiso (4-7, 3.74) in the second of the three-game set. First pitch comes at 5:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
