Lefty's Paredes, Villarreal added to roster, Orta placed on DL

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 10, 2009) - The Seattle Mariners have announced the following roster moves affecting the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. The Jaxx continue their series tonight with the Carolina Mudcats, beginning at 7:05 at Pringles Park.

LHP Edward Paredes has been promoted from A+ High Desert. With the A+ High Desert Mavericks. Paredes made 36 appearances for the Mavs, including three starts. He went 8-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 62.1innings pitched. He tallied three saves, while striking out 50 and walking 20 batters. Paredes was signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in May, 2005. In 2008, Paredes made two starts for the Diamond Jaxx and was 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA. He was promoted from Low-A Wisconsin to West Tenn on Aug. 22. Dealt six shutout innings against Montgomery on August 26, 2008.

LHP Luis Villarreal joins the Jaxx and made his first appearance on Sunday afternoon. Villarreal dealt an inning in the Jaxx 6-4 loss to Carolina and picked up the loss, giving up two runs, including a game winning homer to Todd Frazier. The Mariners purchased the contract of Luis Villarreal on August 8th from the Northern League's (IND) Kansas City T-Bones. Villarreal was originally selected in the 20th round of the 2002 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox. The 29 year old left the T-Bones as the current Northern League leader in ERA (3.07) and strikeouts (87) while posting a 5-3 record over 96 and two-thirds innings in 16 starts for the T-Bones. Villarreal made four appearances this season of five-plus innings where he didn't allow a run. His best performance came against Fargo-Moorhead on July 11 when he held the RedHawks to just two hits over seven shutout innings in a victory. He leaves having won each of his last three decisions.

RHP Ricky Orta has been placed on the 7-Day DL after suffering right shoulder stiffness in the game on Saturday at Pringles Park. Orta was removed from the game in the sixth inning. This is Orta's second stint on the DL this season having been placed on the disabled list on April 22nd. Orta has appeared in 24 games for the Diamond Jaxx this season, including three starts. Orta leads the team with a 1.94 ERA and boasts a 3-2 record with three saves.
