Complete game for Hill earns series win for Diamond Jaxx

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 10, 2009) - Nick Hill (4-4) dealt his first complete game of his career on Monday night, as the Diamond Jaxx (23-22) take the series and dodge the rain, beating the Carolina Mudcats (17-28). 7-1. Hill sat down 23 Mudcat hitters in a row from the second to the ninth inning. Hill completes a game for the first time in his career, and the Army graduate becomes the first Diamond Jaxx pitcher to go the distance in nine innings this season. The Jaxx snap a four series losing drought with the 3-2 series win over Carolina. The Jaxx last series win was back in early July, taking three of four from Mobile prior to the All-Star break. Also, the 2:02 minute game becomes the shortest game of the season for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.

Marshall Hubbard has busted out in the series with Carolina and in continued in the series finale on Monday night. Hubbard turned on a Jeremy Horst fastball and homered to right giving West Tenn a 1-0 lead.

The Jaxx added to the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring twice. Callix Crabbe brought home Matt Mangini with a soft grounball single to give the Jaxx their second run and Ezequiel Carrera followed with a bunt single, plating Travis Garcia. West Tenn took a 3-0 lead after the third.

Greg Halman finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI he picked up in the fourth inning. After a single by Garcia and walk to Carrera, Halman delivered a two-RBI triple to deep right-center plating two runs. The Jaxx blew the game open, leading 5-0 after the fourth.

Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Travis Garcia homered to right. Garcia has two homers in the last two days and now three in the month of August. Garcia finished the night 3-for-4 with the homer. The three-hit effort by Garcia equaled his season best. The Jaxx finished off their scoring on an RBI groundout by Marshall Hubbard, scoring Callix Crabbe. The Jaxx lead 7-0.

Nick Hill took a one hit shutout into the ninth inning, but Just Tordi greeted the Jaxx starter with double off the left wall, ending a streak of 23 in a row retired. Hill then surrendered another double to Sean Henry that scored Tordi, breaking up the shutout bid. Hill dealt the complete game on three hits, allowing just one run while striking out four and walking one.

Taking the loss for Carolina was Jeremy Horst (0-3). Horst is now winless in three starts at the Double-A level.
