Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs dropped their second decision in as many nights versus St. John's at Copps Coliseum on Saturday evening. More than 9,000 fans were on hand for the second of a two-game home series against the Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs opened the scoring nine minutes into the opening frame on a goal by Nathan Barrett that came one second after a power play expired. St. John's forward Kyle Wellwood fed a pass cross-crease to Barrett who then banged it in for his third of the season and second in as many nights.
In the second period the Maple Leafs would make it 2-0 on a great individual effort by forward Kyle Wellwood. Wellwood took a pass from the corner, got past a defender in front and chipped the puck over a sprawling Dan Ellis for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. The goal came at the 4:55 mark of the second.
The Bulldogs got on the board midway through the second period on a power-play goal by defenceman Ron Hainsey. Tomas Plekanec and Chris Higgins passed between each other before feeding Hainsey who then fired a shot through traffic and past Leafs' goalie Mikael Tellqvist. The goal came at 10:12 and was the first of the season for Hainsey.
The Maple Leafs would make it 3-1 before the period would end on a goal by Ben Ondrus. Ondrus took a pass on the doorstep from Jeremy Williams and banged home his third of the year.
In the third the Leafs added to their lead on a wrap-around goal by Ben Ondrus, his second of the game. The goal came at 7:42 and was assisted by Clarke Wilm.
Earning the win for the Maple Leafs was Mikael Tellqvist who stopped 26 of 27 shots. Dan Ellis stopped 19 shots in a losing cause for the Bulldogs.
