April 8, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release
SALEM, VA - Keith Curcio was 3-for-5 with a RBI, Joseph Daris went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Ryan Lawlor pitched four one hit and one run innings in his season debut as the Mudcats won their first game of the season 5-2 in Salem on Friday night at LewisGale Field.
Lawlor pitched through the fourth and allowed just one run and one hit over four solid innings in his Carolina League and Mudcats (1-1) debut. He faced the minimum through three and held the Red Sox (1-1) without a hit through three and 2/3 innings.
Zack Bird relieved Lawlor after the fourth and earned the victory after keeping Salem to just one run over an inning and 2/3 in his first game with the Mudcats this season. Bird (W, 1-0) also struck out two and walked one.
Sean McLaughlin followed Bird and worked through one and 1/3 scoreless frames. Chase Johnson-Mullins took over for McLaughlin in the eighth and went on to finish the inning unscathed while then working a scoreless ninth. Johnson-Mullins (S, 1) finished his first appearance with a walk and a strikeout over two innings and earned his first save of the season.
The Mudcats scored four of their five total runs in the game in the fourth against Salem starter Travis Lakins. Daris started the scoring and broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a bases loaded single to right. Curcio then followed with an RBI triple and scored moments later on a throwing error during the same play.
Lakins (L, 0-1) left during the fourth and in all, allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over three and 2/3 innings pitched. He walked three and struck out three while taking the loss in his first full-season league start.
Daris and Curcio both singled off reliever Austin Maddox in the ninth and eventually helped the Mudcats score their final run of the game. Maddox let go of a wild pitch that allowed Daris to score and the Mudcats took a 5-2 lead.
Maddox allowed a run and two hits in his inning of relief work for the Red Sox. Jamie Callahan pitched the seventh and eighth and kept the Mudcats scoreless over two innings. Yankory Pimental pitched parts of the fourth, fifth and sixth and kept the Mudcats scoreless while yielding just one hit.
The Mudcats victory evened the series at a game apiece. Game three of the four game set is scheduled for Saturday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm at LewisGale Field in Salem. Righty Max Povse will start for the Mudcats against lefthander Jalen Beeks and the Red Sox.
