MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Charcer Burks and Cael Brockmeyer both homered but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 7-5 to the Frederick Keys Friday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Burks got the scoring going with a solo home run deep down the left field line in the third inning, which was the only scoring that Keys (1-1) starter John Means would allow.

Myrtle Beach (1-1) starter Zach Hedges (0-1) retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced but ran into trouble in the middle innings.

Jomar Reyes led off the top of the fifth with an infield single before Jonah Heim reached on a walk. Anthony Coronia promptly singled to tie the game at one.

In the sixth, Jay Gonzalez singled and Steve Wilkerson reached on an error to begin the frame. Two batters later, Aderlin Rodriguez laced a two-run triple to the right center field gap, giving the Keys a 3-1 lead and chasing Hedges.

Reliever Dillon Maples surrendered two more runs after walking two and allowing an RBI single to Jimmy Bosco. Frederick finished with four runs in the inning, taking a 5-1 lead.

Myrtle Beach chipped away with a run in the sixth before Brockmeyer crushed a two-run home run over the bleachers in left, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

But the Keys tacked on insurance in the eighth. With two outs, Bosco doubled before Heim stroked a single to left to give Frederick a 6-4 advantage.

The Pelicans got the run back in the bottom of the inning when David Bote doubled off the left field wall to score Jeffrey Baez.

However, the Keys got to Pelicans reliever Jordan Minch in the ninth. After a walk and a groundout, Josh Hart looped a single to center to plate Gonzalez and make it 7-5 Keys.

Burks gave the Pelicans hope in the bottom of the ninth, tripling down the right field line to start the inning. After Rashad Crawford walked to put the tying run on base, Keys reliever Garrett Cortright retired the next three batters to earn the save.

Frederick scored in four of the last five innings, led by Rodriguez' three hits and two runs batted in. Keys reliever David Richardson (1-0) earned the win.

The third game of the four game series takes place Saturday at 7:05 p.m., with Trevor Clifton (0-0, 0.00) taking the ball for the Pelicans, opposed by Matthew Grimes (0-0, 0.00) for Frederick.
