Late Walks Decide Game

Down one run the Calgary Vipers walked seven times in their final two at-bats to score three runs and defeat the St. George RoadRunners 9-7 before 1735 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Leading 3-0 after four innings and 6-2 after six innings the Vipers gave up five runs in the seventh to fall behind 7-6 before walking back into the game late and retaking the lead. With the win Calgary improves to 19-7 on the second half and are five games up in the North Division second half standings. Overall the Snakes improved to 42-27 on the Golden Baseball League season.

Jorge Vasquez (3-0) earned the win after closing out the five run seventh inning and retiring all four batters he faced including two strikeouts. Claudio Galva recorded his league high 17th save with a three-up, three-down ninth.

At the plate Medicine Hat, Alberta's Drew Miller led the way going three-for-three with three runs batted in.

Calgary opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan singled, Guillermo Reyes walked, both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Kevin Price hit a sacrifice fly, and Drew Miller picked up a run batted in double for a 2-0 advantage.

The Vipers added to the lead in the third when with two outs Price singled and Miller doubled him in for a 3-0 lead.

The RoadRunners got within one run in the fifth frame as Jason Cramer was hit by a pitch, Ben Hildreth laid down a sacrifice bunt, Cody McMorris doubled in a run, and Mike Castellano singled in another for a 3-2 score.

Calgary answered right back in the bottom of the fifth when Kaplan walked, Reyes singled, Brent Metheny reached on a fielder's choice with an error allowing Kaplan to score, with two outs Miller was intentionally walked, and Luis Taveras spanked a two-run double for a 6-2 lead.

St. George exploded in the seventh inning as Cramer singled, Damarii Saunderson collected a RBI double, and with two outs Castellano doubled in one, Matt Huggins walked followed by consecutive RBI singles from Chris Nastasi, Chris Juarez, and Gabe DeMarco for a five run frame and a 7-6 advantage.

The Snakes quickly tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Reyes and Price walked, Miller singled to load the bases, and Taveras walked for a RBI and a 7-7 score.

Calgary retook the lead in the eighth as Kaplan, Reyes, Metheny, and Price all walked for a run followed by a Miller sacrifice fly for a 9-7 score.

This four game series against the St. George RoadRunners in Calgary at Foothills Stadium continues on Monday August 16th and Tuesday August 17th with both games starting at 7:05 PM MDT.
