Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - More than 2,300 fans and 230 dogs were treated to a thrilling Golden Baseball League game on Sunday at TELUS Field, as the Edmonton Capitals beat the Tucson Toros 11-9 at the annual Bark In The Park event.
Caps left fielder Steve Brown blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to cap off a six-run rally for the home side that turned a 6-4 Tucson lead into a 10-6 Edmonton advantage. The Toros made it close again with three in the eighth, but the Caps added one more for good measure to seal the deal.
"I just wanted to get a good pitch and put it in play, and he threw me a hanging slider that I got a good swing on," the hero Brown said of his game-changing homer. "We needed that hit and we really needed a win. But that's just today. I hope we can keep going now and win a lot more."
Caps first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh also crushed a solo home run during the six-run rally in the seventh. It was his 19th longball of the year and 79th RBI, and he is the GBL leader in both offensive categories.
Four different pitchers combined efforts to bring home the win for the Caps, starting with Daryl Arreola, who gave up six runs and 10 hits over 6.2 innings. Ryan Paul and Mike Hrynio also had brief relief appearances, and closer Chad Blackwell recorded the final five outs for his 15th save of the year.
Adding to the excitement, Bark In The Park is one of the Caps' most popular events of the season, as fans were invited to bring their dogs to TELUS Field to take in the action. A $15 ticket got a dog and its owner through the gates, with the proceeds from the event going to the Edmonton Humane Society.
After splitting the first two games of the four-game series, the Caps (12-14) and Toros (12-16) are back at it on Monday at 7 p.m., as it's another edition of Carpool Mondays. Fans who have four or more people in their vehicles can park for free. The series concludes Tuesday with another 7 p.m. start.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
