Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Beginning a key series against their North Division rivals, the Chico Outlaws, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for game one on Saturday night. Giving Andrew Arreola (5-6) his tenth start of the season, Victoria matched up against Mark McLemore (5-4) in the series opener.

Falling behind big in the top of the first inning, the Outlaws quieted the crowd with a 6-0 lead out of the gate. After Blake Gailen led off the inning with a single, a walk to Bobby Hill and an error charged against Seals second basemen Jerry Madueno allowed J.J. Sherrill to reach, Arreola issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Mitch Einertson and Mark Samuelson to hand Chico a 2-0 advantage.

Then, after a sacrifice fly off the bat of Santo DeLeon put the Outlaws up by three, an RBI single off the bat of Pascual Del Real to go with another infield error from the Seals chased the Victoria starter from the game. With Jason Kershner on the mound, the second single in the inning from Gailen polished off a 6-0 lead through one half-inning.

Responding with some offense of their own in the bottom of the frame, the Seals jumped onto the board when a lead-off double courtesy of Wilver Perez and a walk to Colin Moro preceded a run-scoring double from Terrence McClain and a sacrifice fly from Tim Rodriguez to make it a 6-2 ball game.

After a scoreless second inning, Chico restored their six-run lead when a one-out single from Gailen drew another RBI and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sherrill made it an 8-2 score. In the top of the fourth the Outlaws continued to cruise, using back-to-back singles from DeLeon and Robby Alcombrack to set up another Victoria error that allowed one to cross home before the third bases-loaded walk of the game lifted Chico to a 10-2 advantage.

Padding their lead by two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Outlaws put the contest out of reach with the help of a run-scoring double from DeLeon and an RBI base hit delivered by Alcombrack to push their tally to 12 runs. Providing a spark with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, Perez sent the game into the ninth inning at a 12-3 score.

In the final frame of regulation Chico added another pair of runs to the scoreboard, striking for two consecutive two-out singles from Samuelson and DeLeon to lead by a commanding 14-3 margin. The Seals were able to save face in the bottom of the inning, however, getting the third double of the game from Perez along with a two-run single from Moro to surrender game one by a 14-5 final score.

Andrew Arreola never overcame a tough start, falling to 5-7 with just two-thirds of an inning pitched, while Mark McLemore was strong through seven complete frames en route to victory. Seven hits and four RBI's in a combined effort from Blake Gailen and Santo DeLeon paced the Chico offense, while Wilver Perez finished 4-for-5 despite a club-record five infield errors charged against the Seals.
