Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Looking to bounce back after a game one loss to the Chico Outlaws, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for a Sunday matinee matchup. In a battle of right-handers, the home side sent Anthony Pluta (4-3) to the mound against Chico ace Kris Honel (7-2) in game two.
Taking an early lead in the bottom of the second frame, the Seals got on the board when a lead-off single from Brian Rios set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Edgecombe. One frame later Victoria doubled their advantage, with Wilver Perez using a base hit and three stolen bases to complete an unassisted trip to home plate, giving the Seals a 2-0 lead.
With Pluta carrying a no hitter through for a two-third innings, and both pitchers battling into the sixth, the Outlaws stunned Victoria when a walk to J.J. Sherrill and a hit-by-pitch issued to Mitch Einertson set up a three-run blast from John Urick to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.
Hoping to rally from behind in the game's final inning, Terrence McClain started off the bottom of the ninth with a double to the wall before Tim Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second base for two runners in scoring position.
Brian Rios then laced a line drive off the glove of Chico first basemen Urick that rolled into right centrefield, that allowed both runners to score and earned the Seals their biggest win of the season in walk-off fashion, a 4-3 final score.
Seals closer Brandon Villafuerte improved to 6-0 after stranding two Outlaws in the top of the ninth inning, while Justin Segal blew a save attempt for the visitors, falling to 2-2 on the season. Brian Rios was the hero for the Seals with two hits and two RBI's, handing Victoria their seventh walk-off win of the season.
