Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD. July 18, 2015) ---A night after banging out 17 hits, Southern Maryland was held to just two runs, falling to Camden by the final of 3-2.
One of the big stories of the game was RHP Brian Baker who went 6.1 innings for the Blue Crabs, and took a no hitter into the seventh inning. That's when Camden cashed in scoring all three of their runs. Daniel Rockett started the rally, reaching base on an error by the first baseman Daryle Ward. Daniel then stole second and took third on a pass ball. Norberto Susini walked to put runners at first and third. The next hitter Evan Crawford stood in and lashed a single to right field to score Rockett and tie the game at one. That was all for Brian Baker, as manager Stan Cliburn took the baseball, and called Trey Barham out of the bullpen. The next hitter, Zach MacPhee singled to right to load the bases for Brandon Chaves who hit a broken bat flare single out to shallow center to score Susini to make it 2-1. Michael Rockett then reached base on the error by shortstop Casey Frawley, allowing Crawford to score to make a 3-1 Camden lead.
Southern Maryland tried to play comeback though in the bottom of the eighth, and scored a run. With two runners on base, Gustavo Molina lined a single out to left center, allowing Fred Lewis to score to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the ninth though, Matt Gorgen, who was fourth in the Atlantic League in saves picked up his 17th of the year as he set the Blue Crabs down in order 1-2-3 to give Camden the 3-2 victory.
Jovan Rosa contributed the only other run for Southern Maryland driving in Daryle Ward with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. While Southern Maryland out hit Camden by a 6-3 mark, they left six runners on base in opportune times. Steve Garrison pitched beautifully for Camden, going seven innings, allowing a run, on four hits, and striking out five.
With the win, Camden breaks the Blue Crabs four game winning streak against the Riversharks. The rubber match of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch is set for 2:05 P.M. RHP Wes Torrez (4-3, 5.11) will throw for Camden, while Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (3-5, 4.85) to the hill.
