Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - July 18, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-2, 33-46) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (4-6, 40-40) 8-4 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday night to even up the three game weekend set at one victory apiece. Bridgeport has now won nine of their last eleven games overall, and remain atop the Liberty Division second half standings.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cody Scarpetta, making his first start since May 16th and first appearance since May 22nd picked up a no-decision, pitching four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out two. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Matt Wright (5-3) suffered the loss, tossing five and one-third innings, surrendering six runs on 13 hits, walking one, striking out three while not walking a batter.
Bridgeport took a 2-0 lead off Wright in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. Wilson Batista brought home Jobduan Morales with the game's first run on an RBI double, after Morales led off the frame with a two-base hit of his own. Brandon Jones brought in Morales with a run-scoring double, the third extra-base hit of the inning for the 'Fish.
Already leading 3-0, the Bluefish broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on five hits again off Wright, as Bridgeport doubled their lead to 6-0 on an RBI double by Andres Rodriguez, a sacrifice fly by Matt Wessinger, and a run-scoring base knock by Bryant Nelson. The 'Fish made it 8-0 in their favor in the eighth inning on a two-run homer by Josh Prince off Skeeters reliever James Parr, his second big fly in as many nights against Sugar Land.
The Skeeters would not go down without a fight, as they connected on six consecutive singles in the top of the ninth inning off Bluefish reliever Luis Perdomo, and the late rally saw Sugar Land cut the eight-run deficit in half to 8-4. Ricky Van Asselberg then called upon his All-Star closer Patrick Mincey, and he shut the door, retiring all three batters he faced, striking out two, registering his team-leading 14th save of the season. The Bluefish pounded out a total of 17 hits, eight of them for extra bases (seven doubles and one home run). The offensive explosion marked the 29th time in 2015 that Bridgeport has registered ten or more hits in a single game. Batista led the way for the Bluefish with three hits, as all nine batters in the Bridgeport lineup had at least one hit, with seven players picking up two hits or more. John Alonso's RBI double in the fifth inning was his fourth double of the series, and it extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine consecutive games.
Bridgeport plays the rubber game of the series against the Sugar Land Skeeters and the finale of the homestand at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday, July 19th. First pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
