Edinburg Roadrunners News Release

EDINBURG, Texas- Eric Gonzalez came through for the Edinburg Coyotes once again as hit a game winning two-run RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over the Alexandria Aces Wednesday night. The Coyotes are now two games ahead of the Laredo Broncos for the fourth and final playoff spot after they lost to the Amarillo Dillas.

It was not only clutch hitting that was key for the Coyotes but the pitching had a lot to do with victory as well. James Mondesir gave up two runs on only five hits through six innings of play and Bryan Heaston picked up his second win of the season after he came in for relief. Heaston pitched two innings and gave up only one hit. Luke Prihoda picked up his seventh save.

The Coyotes struck early as Argelis Nunez hit an RBI single to center field bringing in Gary Roche from third to give the Coyotes a 1-0 advantage in the in the bottom of the first. After four scoreless innings, the Aces answered back in the top of the sixth after Brian Nichols hit a solo homerun over the right field fence to tie the game up. It was Nichols' twelfth blast of the season. Rafael Ozuna then singled and advanced to third off a double from Andre Marshal. Ozuna then scored on a wild pitch from Mondesir to give the Aces the first lead in the game and in the series at 2-1.

But the Coyotes struck back in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Robert Matlock was hit by a pitch and Daryl Jones came in to pinch run. Nunez then slammed one towards center field for a one out double which advanced Jones to third. Juan Carlos Ovalles relieved B.J. Litchfield but it didn't matter who pitched to Gonzalez as he belted one passed Litchfield and in to center field for a two-run RBI single that scored Jones and Nunez for a 3-2 lead. The Coyotes and Aces will play again tomorrow night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05.
