Winning streak ends as WhiteWings top Colts

San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts outhit the Harlingen WhiteWings 9-8 Wednesday night, but couldn't outdo the WhiteWings where it mattered, as the Colts' five-game winning streak came to an end with a 9-4 loss in front of 1,544 at Foster Field.

Ryan Fox, who had hit two of his 12 homers on the season against the Colts (47-28) coming into play Wednesday, hit two more, a three-run shot in the first and a two-run shot in the third, both off Alex Merricks (3-1), giving Harlingen (20-56) a 5-0 lead all by himself.

Merricks ended up going five innings, gave up only two other hits besides the two dingers by Fox. He struck out seven, but also walked four and took his first loss as a Colt.

San Angelo got two in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run single by Bryan Frichter off Brock Nehls (1-2), and closed to within two runs on an RBI groundout by Aaron Cone in the fifth. But Matt Greanead gave up a three-run homer to Carl Johnson in the sixth, and the WhiteWings picked up their second unearned run of the night in the eighth off Brian Wilburn.

Nehls, who gave up nine runs and 11 hits against the Colts in four innings on July 27, was much better this time, allowing four runs (three earned), on seven hits through six innings. He also walked four and struck out four.

But the Colts' problem all night was getting the big hit against the three Harlingen pitchers, Nehls, Angel Cordero, and Justin Staatz. San Angelo got the nine hits, as well as seven walks, two hit batsmen, and two Harlingen errors, but left 14 men on base. San Angelo hitters were a combined 5-for-25 with men on base. They stranded one runner in the first, two in the second, two in the sixth (when they had second and third with one out), the bases loaded again in the seventh, two more in the eighth, and one more in the ninth.

Miliade Venas did pitch a scoreless ninth for the Colts, his fifth straight scoreless outing to extend his scoreless streak to 8 2/3 innings. Venas was aided by a nice double play turned with the bases loaded and one out by second baseman Albert Gonzalez, who tagged the runner Trey Hendricks on the way back to first and then fired to the bag to nip Greg Sillivent.

The 'Wings and Colts will play a rubber match Thursday night, as Brian Henschel goes for San Angelo against Miguel Sosa for Harlingen.

Notes: Merricks' last nine runs allowed have come on four homers after not allowing a single long ball in his first 10 appearances with San Angelo...Sillivent came in to hit for Kevin Griffin in the eighth after the All-Star had to leave the game. He had been bothered by a sore left hand and the switch-hitter actually hit right-handed against the righty Matt Greanead in the sixth, picking up a single...Fox's two-homer game was his first multi-homer game of the year.

The Colts conclude this three-game homestand with Harlingen on Thursday, August 7, with Thirsty Thursday sponsored by Miller Lite and Foster Communications. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
