Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - June 27, 2012 - The comeback heroics fell just short for the Rafters Wednesday night at Witter Field. Wisconsin Rapids lost once again to Green Bay, dropped their fifth straight overall and to the Bullfrogs, losing at home 7-5 at Witter Field in front of 1,638.
Green Bay scored in the first when Nick Ammirati (JR, Mississippi State Univ.) fired a throw short to third base on what turned out to be a moot stolen base attempt. The pitch was called ball four, and with runners at first and second, the stolen base attempt was off, but the catchers throw went into left field and Green Bay took the final 90 feet to score. It would be that kind of night for Wisconsin Rapids.
Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois) clubbed his team-leading third homer to give the Rafters a 2-1 lead in the second. The two run blast scored Aaron Gretz (FR, Ohio State Univ.) who had a nice night going 2-for-4 with a double. Hohl would outshine him however. The Rafters third baseman went 3-for-3 with a walk and finished a triple short of the cycle.
Ben Heller (JR, Olivet Nazarene Univ.) threw his shortest start of the season. The right-hander allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks. He possessed excellent stuff, striking out eight, but Green Bay managed to find holes for the ball and put together four hits in a three-run sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
The Rafters scored two in the ninth on a two-run single from Sean Godfrey (SO, Ball State Univ.), but Brandon Downes (FR, Univ. of Virginia) would once again strikeout against Bullfrog closer Will Landshelft to end the game.
Heller (2-1) took his first loss of the season, while Zak Hermans (2-1), Green Bay's starter, picked up his second win. Landshelft (4) once again recorded the save.
The Rafters (13-14) go on the road for their longest road trip of the year Thursday. They play in Mequan for three against the Lakeshore Chinooks (13-15) followed by two against the Bombers (12-16) in Battle Creek, MI.
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters are members of the 16-team summer collegiate Northwoods League. The Rafters will play a 70 game schedule with 35 home games in 2012.
