Wausau Woodchucks News Release

MADISON - The Wisconsin Woodchucks and Madison Mallards battled back and forth the entire evening, but the Woodchucks were able to shut down the Mallards in the eighth and ninth to take the 11-8 victory.

Pascal Paul got the start for the Wisconsin Woodchucks and had a first inning that he would probably like to forget. In the inning, the Mallards scored twice aided by two Paul errors and two balks to take an early 2-0 lead over the Woodchucks.

The Woodchucks would answer quickly, though, as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the second. Skyler Ewing led the inning off for the Woodchucks with his second home run of the season, a solo blast to dead center field. Later in the inning, after a Brad McKewon double, Branden Cogswell picked up an RBI on a single to tie the game at two.

The Woodchucks would take the lead in the fourth on Cogswell's second RBI single of the game, but it would be short-lived. The Mallards answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Jack Livingston led off with a single and scored two batters later on a single by Tom Verdi. The second run would come across when Taylor Gushue scored on a double play grounded into by John Welborn.

It would stay 4-3 Mallards until the sixth when the Mallards pitching staff lost all command of the strike zone. Five Woodchucks walked in the inning, including consecutive RBI walks by Eric Filia-Snyder, JD Davis, and Brendon Hayden, as the Woodchucks scored four runs to take a 7-4 lead.

The Mallards would cut into the "˜Chucks lead in the sixth when Tyler Marincov drove a double to center that scored Wellborn to make it a 7-5 Woodchuck lead.

The "˜Chucks would answer back, extending the lead to four runs in the seventh. Brad McKewon led off with a walk, and while he was later stealing third base, the throw from Gushue went into left field allowing McKewon to score. Mike Bernal would later score on a single by Filia-Snyder to make it 9-5 Woodchucks.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gushue hit a three-run home run over the left field wall in his second game as a Mallard to cut the Woodchucks lead to one.

The Woodchucks would add insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth to take a 11-8 lead, but they would not need the runs as Max Ising came on to shut the door for the "˜Chucks.

The "˜Chucks will be back in action tomorrow at Athletic Park at 6:35 to host the Eau Claire Express.
