PORTLAND, Oreg. - A late rally came up just short in Game One, as the Portland Winterhawks took Game One of the Western Conference Quarterfinal against the Everett Silvertips at Veterans Memorial Coliseum Friday night.

Austin Roest opened the scoring 7:10 into the first period, converting on a bouncing puck in front of the net for his first career WHL Playoff goal. The Winterhawks answered back with a powerplay goal at 8:52, as Robbie Fromm-Delorme banged in a rebound for his first of the postseason.

Marcus Nguyen gave Portland the lead 5:26 into the second period, tapping in a powerplay rebound for a 2-1 Portland advantage that lasted through the middle frame.

Jackson Berezowski knotted the score at 4:17 in the third, redirecting a powerplay shot from Aidan Sutter. Marcus Nguyen restored the Portland lead with a one-timer as a man advantage was concluding for his second of the game at 10:59. James Stefan tacked on a fourth goal, deflecting a shot in front of the net which was affirmed as a good goal after a lengthy high-stick review.

Roest brought the Tips back within one at 16:49, as Roan Woodward forced an errant pass from behind the net by goaltender Jan Špunar which left the cage vacant for the Silvertips. Everett couldn't break through with the extra skater as regulation expired, as Portland sealed a 4-3 final in Game One.

Tyler Palmer stopped 33 of 37 in the game, with only one goal allowed at even-strength. Špunar stopped 31 of 34 in the win.

Game 2 is scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tickets to Games 3 and 4 in Everett are available. Game 3 is Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Angel of the Winds Arena, with Game 4 on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
