Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - Despite the contest being a one-goal hockey game after two periods of play, London scored three times in the final six minutes of the game to earn a 4-1 victory Saturday night. Connor Roberts scored the lone goal for Flint on the Firebirds' 5th-annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. London's Antonio Stranges recorded two goals and Brett Brochu made 29 saves on 30 Flint shots to lead the Knights.
After a back-and-forth game in the first period with both goaltenders making crucial saves, London would be the first to strike at 14:13 of the middle period. While shorthanded, Alec Regula picked up a rebound in the defensive zone and dished it ahead to Josh Nelson. Nelson fed it back to Regula before receiving the puck back again a second time and snuck a shot five-hole past Luke Cavallin.
The Knights scored three goals in 3:56.ÃÂ First, Sahil Panwar sent Stranges on a breakaway from the red-line in. Stranges scored on a backhander that found twine above Cavallin's left shoulder with 5:18 remaining in the game. Then,ÃÂ Liam Foudy dished a pass to Connor McMichael in the left corner, who made a skilled play to get the puck to Jonathan Gruden in the slot, scoring five-hole at 17:03.ÃÂ Finally, Stranges would score his second of the night with 1:22 remaining, converting on a pass from Kirill Steklov to the slot, gloveside.
The Firebirds would get on the board with 26 remaining in the game. Evgeniy Oksentyuk led Cody Morgan in stride up the left-wing wall who found Connor Roberts at the left circle. Roberts scored a shot far-side, gloveside to break the shutout.
London outshot Flint 47-30 and were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Flint was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.ÃÂ Cavallin made 43 saves on 47 shots.
