Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
LANSING, MI -- A two-out, RBI double by Brian Bormaster in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Lansing Lugnuts on their way to a 4-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Oldsmobile Park. Anthony Hatch had four hits and drove in an insurance run for the Lugnuts.
Lansing (37-24) went up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning by Anthony Garibaldi.
The Lugnuts added a run in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of Rattler miscues. Rattler starting pitcher Jose Escalona fielded a one out grounder by David Hicks cleanly, but fired wildly to first and Hicks reached on the error. Hicks stole second with Hatch at the plate. Then, Hatch sent a line drive to left and Hicks was going to stop at third, but Rattler leftfielder Jairo Hernandez allowed the one-hopper to get by him and Hicks scored for a 2-0 Lansing lead.
Hernandez atoned for his error by starting a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. His single was followed by a single off the bat of Jeff Dominguez. Luis Valbuena followed with a triple into the right field corner for pair of RBI and a tie game.
Wisconsin (25-37) caught a big break in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Pettway hit a long drive to leftcenter field over the fence. The ball bounced off the hands of a fan and back onto the field, but the umpires gave no signal for a home run. Centerfielder Michael Saunders fired the ball in to third base and Pettway was nipped there for the first out of the inning. Escalona got out of the rest of the inning without incident.
Roman Martinez was not as lucky out of the Rattler bullpen. The Wisconsin reliever hit Jesus Gonzalez with one out to put the go-ahead run on base in the bottom of the seventh. After getting the second out of the inning, Martinez fell behind 3-1 in the count to Bormaster. The .170 hitter laced the 3-1 pitch to the gap in rightcenter for and RBI double and a 3-2 Lugnut lead.
Pettway blooped in a double in the bottom of the eighth to start the inning. A grounder to the right side of the infield by Hicks moved Pettway to third. Hatch drove in Pettway with a single, his fourth hit of the night.
Paul Phillips pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eleventh save of the season.
Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Nick Allen (4-0, 2.61ERA) gets his first starting assignment as a Timber Rattler. Kristian Bell (4-3, 3.99ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lugnuts. Game time is 1:05pm CDT.
