Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Mario Lisson's two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning erased a 3-2 deficit and lifted the Burlington Bees (30-30) to a 4-3 win over the Kane County Cougars (38-24) at Community Field tonight. The win stopped a four-game losing streak for the Bees and kept the team's slim playoff hopes alive. The Bees lead this series 1-0 and the season series is now tied 2-2.
The Bees got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jose Duarte, batting leadoff for the first time this year, started the inning with a single. Cougars starter Vince Mazzaro tried to pick him off at first, but threw the ball down the right field line and Duarte went all the way to third. Mazzaro got a bounce out to third for the first out and with the infield drawn-in got Brady Everett to ground slowly to second. Frank Martinez throw to the plate was late and low as Duarte scored and Everett went to second when the ball went to the screen. After a walk and a groundout, the Bees had runners on second and third and Jeff Howell hit a chopper to third that ate up Jeff Baisley on a funny hop. The play was ruled a hit and an RBI and the Bees led 2-0, but both runs were unearned. Those were the only runs allowed by Mazzaro through five innings. Joe Newby pitched two scoreless innings and John Herrera added a scoreless eighth in relief.
Bees starter Carlos Rosa allowed two runs in 5.2 innings. The first run came in the second without the benefit of a hit. Rosa walked two and hit a batter to load the bases before walking Martinez to force in a run. The Cougars tied the score in the fifth. Jeff Sellers led off the inning with a double and scored on a base hit by Nick Blasi. Rosa came out of the game in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and two outs and Gilbert De La Vara struck out Mike Massaro to end the threat. De La Vara retired seven in a row, including five strikeouts, to get through the eighth, but gave up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Martinez led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sellers. After another strikeout of Massaro, De La Vara was one strike away from ending the inning when Blasi hit a 1-2 pitch up the middle to drive in Martinez and give the Cougars their first lead at 3-2. De La Vara then fanned Steve Kleen to end the inning.
The Cougars brought in Bob Semerano for the bottom of the ninth and Semerano walked Ethien Santana to start the inning and hit Duarte with a 2-2 pitch while he was squared to bunt. Josh Johnson got the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and Everett was intentionally walked to load the bases setting up Lisson's game-winning hit. Semerano (0-1) got the loss and De La Vara (4-3) picked up the win. Peoria also won tonight, so the Bees remain five games out of a playoff spot now with just seven left to play.
The Bees and Cougars continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Community Field. RH David Henninger (1-3, 5.67) will start for the Bees against LH Ron Madej (1-1, 1.98) of the Cougars. Tomorrow is a Louisa Communications Kids Day and kids get to run the bases after the game. The gates open at 1:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
