Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Nearly 2,900 fans were waiting for a great Bank of the West fireworks show after the Kernels/Wizards game on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but the fireworks got started a little early, thanks to the Kernels offense.
The home team took advantage of three Fort Wayne errors and sent twelve batters to the plate en route to a seven run first inning. The Kernels (28-35) pounded out nine hits on the evening with Larry Infante going 2-4 and Brett Martinez had 2 RBI.
That was more than enough for Kernels' starter Stephen Marek (7-1) as he established a season-best 12 strikeouts over the six innings he worked. Marek scattered four hits and his only blemish, a solo home run by Nick Hundley in the fourth inning.
The Kernels pitching staff combined for 16 K's on the night, also a season high, as Chris Howell and Tim Didjurgis combined to keep the Wizards at bay the final three innings.
Fort Wayne starter Grant Varnell (2-6) took the loss giving up nine hits and eight runs (three earned) over six innings.
The Kernels and Wizards continue their series tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm as the Kernels welcome Skyy Dogs USA to the stadium. It will also be KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day and Bark in the Park, where dog owners can bring their dog to the game. Fans can get autographs from the Kernels on the main concourse from 1:20 to 1:40 pm, and after the game, kids can run the bases and play catch on the field, thanks to Velocity Sports Performance. Gates open at 1 pm.
