Late Inning Magic Falls Short, Pelicans Win 6-5

North Augusta, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets trailed 6-1 heading to the ninth inning, and with two outs nearly came all the way back. They scored four runs, including a three-run homer from Landon Stephens to get the tying run to the plate. Ricardo Rodriguez grounded out and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs) hung on, 6-5.
D.J. Herz was terrific. He tossed five innings and struck out nine to get the win. The victory gives Myrtle Beach a 3-2 lead in the six-game series.
The Pelicans offense opened up the night with two runs. A two-out double scored two off the bat of Jonathan Sierra, and the Pelicans took the early advantage.
In the first inning, it looked like Herz was going to have another rocky outing. A solo home run from Vaughn Grissom cut the Myrtle Beach lead in half at 2-1. Herz entered the night with a 13.50 ERA in three starts against Augusta. he flushed the first inning homer to shut down the Jackets for five frames.
Grissom had both hits off Herz, and Danis Correa entered in the sixth inning. Correa was lights out as well. Going two scoreless frames.
Myrtle Beach took a 4-1 lead in the sixth thanks to RBIs from Ed Howard and Kevin Made. A 4-1 lead was extended in the eighth. Two more runs came in for the Pelicans on a Matt Mervis home run. It was just the second hit this series for Mervis. Both were home runs.
The Pelicans led 6-1 and were outhitting Augusta 10-3 going to the ninth inning. Bailey Reid got two strikeouts, and then ran into trouble. Bryson Horne had an RBI single in the ninth inning, and Stephens would come up with a three-run homer. Jarod Wright entered and retired Rodriguez to end the night.
NOTES:
* Miguel Pena tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
* Vaughn Grissom finishes the month of July hitting .429 (18-for-142).
* Landon Stephens hit his eighth home run of the season. He hit a home run on back-to-back nights.
