Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany Devils scored three power-play goals, but the Charlotte Checkers had an answer each time, defeating the Devils, 5-3, Saturday in front of 5,823 at the Times Union Center. Chad Wiseman led Albany with a goal and two assists, while Mike McKenna made 32 saves.
The teams split their season series, 3-3, and the Devils now stand at 31-39-1-4 on the season. The Checkers improve to 42-26-2-7.
Wiseman was coming off a three-game absence and registered his 10th multi-point performance and his fourth three-point effort. Steve Zalewski and David McIntyre joined Wiseman in the goal column with power-play tallies of their own.
McKenna posted his 10th 30-plus-save game and made 11 saves in the first, 10 in the second and 11 in the third.
The Checkers used a pair of power-play goal to carry a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Nicolas Blanchard opened the scoring at 3:13 and Cedric McNicoll closed out the frame at 16:05. Between the two tallies, Zalewski had the touch down low. He patiently lifted a shot over the shoulder of Justin Pogge at 5:15.
More power-play goals followed in the second period. Wiseman, who along with Adam Henrique assisted on Zalewski's tally, made it 2-2 at 8:39, scoring with a two-man advantage.
Back at 5-on-4, McIntyre found the back of the net to give Albany its first lead of the game at 10:16. Wiseman was credited with the primary assist, while Stephen Gionta had the secondary.
The Devils advantage lasted just more than three minutes then Jon Matsumoto netted the contest's first even-strength goal at 13:22.
The game-winner came off the stick of Matthew Pistilli with 2:49 remaining in the game with a snapshot in the slot on a turnover. The goal was unassisted and followed by an empty-net tally by Jacob Micflikier with 32 ticks on the clock.
Rookie Adam Henrique assisted on the team's first goal for his 49th point of the season, which is one shy of tying Matt Taormina's rookie record set last season. Henrique entered the contest fifth in the AHL among rookies for points.
Albany finished 3-for-7 on the power-play, while Charlotte went 3-for-8.
The Devils conclude the weekend with a 4 p.m. outing against the Binghamton Senators on Sunday at the Times Union Center. The team and its fans will be saluting the men and women of the armed forces with "Military Appreciation Night." The final All-Star Wine & Spirits Autograph Session is after the game.
