CALGARY, AB - Colin Doyle scored with four seconds left in the game to lead the San Jose Stealth to a 13-12 win over the Calgary Roughnecks.
Doyle, who finished the game with four goals and five assists, converted a nice feed from Luke Wiles past Calgary goalie Pat Campbell during a late San Jose power play.
"He made a great pass and we got a lucky one past Campbell to end it," Doyle told Comcast SportsNet after the victory that improved San Jose's record to 6-4 to tie the Stealth with the Colorado Mammoth for top spot in the National Lacrosse League's West Division.
After trailing 4-0 early, the Roughnecks (4-8) built up a 12-9 lead by the 7:05 mark of the fourth quarter when Shawn Cable scored his first goal of the season and 50th of his NLL career.
When Nolan Heavenor was penalized for holding the stick, Andrew McBride also drew an unsportsmanlike conduct minor to give the Stealth a two-man advantage.
Cam Sedgwick and Doyle responded with power-play goals 54 second apart before Wiles tied the contest at the 10:13 mark of the final frame. With 1:23 left in regulation, Doyle hit the crossbar before being drilled to the floor by Scott Carnegie, who took an illegal cross-checking penalty on the play.
While shorthanded both Jeff Shattler and Lewis Ratcliff had great chances to score the winning goal, but were both turned aside by San Jose goalie Aaron Bold, who allowed just two goals in 22:23 of play and earned the win in relief of starting netminder Anthony Cosmo.
With 24 seconds left in the contest, San Jose called a timeout and set up the play that ultimately set up Doyle for his clutch goal.
"Thank God our power play came up at the end," Doyle said. "This one would have hurt. It would have put them right back in the thick of things."
Instead, the Roughnecks find themselves fighting for their playoff lives with the Edmonton Rush (2-7), who they will face off against in three of their final four games.
Ratcliff finished the game with his seventh hat trick of the season and added three assists. Scott Ranger had two goals and two helpers, while Curt Malawsky scored twice and set up another. Heavenor (2g, 1a), Kaleb Toth (3a), Cable (1g, 1a) and McBride (2a) also had multi-point performances, while Chris Seller and Scott Carnegie each scored once.
Jeff Zywicki finished the game with three goals and four assists for the Stealth, Wiles scored twice and set up five others, while Sedgwick had a goal and four assists. Playing in his first-ever NLL game, Sean Morris notched two goals and two helpers. Frank Resetarits also scored for San Jose and had two assists.
The Riggers now have a week off before travelling to Edmonton to face the Rush on Saturday, April 5. The same two teams will then clash again at the Pengrowth Saddledome a week later on Saturday, April 12.
