Late Goal Drops Erie in Terrific Battle with OHL's #3
March 4, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Coming home after a four-game stint on the road, the Erie Otters would hope to continue the hot finish they had to their away game set, winning back-to-back against Western Conference foes. The most recent win, a 7-3 demolishing of the then-#2 Flint Firebirds, capped off the final long weekend in Michigan for the team. On a Friday night in Erie, the Otters would welcome those same Firebirds to town, looking to build off the last-time-out's success.
Offensive opportunities would come without much trouble for either side, as the teams would combine for nearly 30 shots through the opening 20. In his 200th career Ontario Hockey League game, Ethan Keppen (14) would start the scoring for Flint just 5:24 in from an Amadeus Lombardi setup. 4:33 later, it would be Captain Brendan Sellan (16) to knot things up for Erie with a fancy stop-and-shoot move just before the halfway mark of the opening frame. Both teams would stay out of the box, create further opportunities, but the game would stand at 1-1 after one, with Erie leading in shots 15-13.
The second period would share many similarities with the first, as both teams would find the back of the net, and find opportunities on the offensive. Erie would once again outshoot Flint in the second, doing so in a 14-9 fashion. Erie would take the lead for the first time in the night, as a Connor Lockhart (19) odd-angle shot would somehow sneak behind Cavallin to make it 2-1 Erie just 3:29 into the new frame. With penalties back and forth on either side, it would be on four-on-four where the only special teams goal would come, as Brennan Othmann (36) would blast a one-timer into twine to make it 2-2 after 40. Erie would lead in shots 29-22 after two.
As tense of a tense third period could be was what awaited the Otters and Firebirds in the closing frame. The lowest shooting period of the game would also be the lowest scoring of the contest, as the score would remain at 2-2 well past the halfway mark. With 14:23 gone by, Coulson Pitre (18) would get one past Lalonde, and the Firebirds would lead for the first time since the early first, 3-2. Despite a six-on-four power play and empty-net to finish the period, the Firebirds would hold on and escape with a tense victory. Neither team would convert on their eight total power plays.
Erie closes its weekend at home on Saturday night against the Flint Firebirds for Hockey Fights Cancer Night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan & UPMC Hamot). The team will don specialty purple jerseys during the game that will be auctioned off at the end of the night. All jersey proceeds will go to benefit the Hillman Cancer Fund. After this weekend, Erie plays host for the next three games, taking on Niagara on Wednesday, March 9 and Windsor on Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12.
