Late Fargo Goal Propels Force over Saints 2-1
November 9, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
Cole Brady made 29 saves and Aaron Grounds scored with under two minutes to play as the Fargo Force escaped Dubuque with a 2-1 win on Saturday night. The Force made it two straight nights in which Dubuque suffered a tough loss late in the third period. The Saints outshot Fargo 30-14 but Brady was stout in net to pick up his fourth win. With the win Fargo moved back to .500 on the season at 5-5-1 while Dubuque fell to 8-2-1.
-The game was deadlocked for the better part of the final 40 minutes. Ondrej Pavel scored 54 seconds in to the second period and Grounds wouldn't score until the 18:48 mark of period three. The defenses took center stage and frustrated the offensive attacks on either side for much of the night.
-Brady, who is a New Jersey Devil's draft pick, was stellar, especially in the second period. Dubuque took a game high 14 shots in that period and Brady turned away all 14.
-Fargo only got three shots on net in the third period, but the final shot ended up being the biggest one as the Force found the back of the net.
-Though he wasn't tested much, Aidan McCarthy still had a solid game in his third USHL start. He made a few key saves and simply didn't see many pucks to build up his numbers in the game. McCarthy moves to 2-1 in his early USHL career.
-Tommy Middleton scored the lone goal for Dubuque, giving him his first point of the season and first USHL goal. Middleton, Reggie Millette and Jack Conroy had arguably their best game of the season as a collective line.
-Dubuque was unable to bounce back from their loss against Waterloo, losing back to back for the first time this season. Still at 8-2-1 the Fighting Saints are in a great position early on in the 2019-20 season.
-For the ninth time in 11 games, Dubuque played to a one goal finish. The Fighting Saints continue to find themselves in tight games and hopefully that will continue to build experience in tough scenarios and get them ready for the playoffs.
-The Saints will have time to regroup before two more games at home next weekend. It's Military Appreciation Night sponsored by Hodge and Run 4 Troops on November 16th when Dubuque takes on Lincoln and the night before they will tussle with Tri-City.
