Efficient RoughRiders Defeat Hawks
November 9, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders scored four goals on 18 shots to top the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-1 at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Saturday.
Waterloo had a 26-18 edge in chances, but Derek Mullahy stopped all but one Waterloo attempt for the win.
Grant Silianoff potted the first goal shorthanded, capitalizing off a Hawks turnover in the neutral zone to score on a breakaway at 5:27 of the second period.
With just 6.9 seconds remaining before intermission, Waterloo answered. Ryan Drkulec's takeaway on the left boards allowed him to swing a pass through the slot, connecting with Ondrej Psenicka in the opposite circle. Psenicka fired in the only shot which Mullahy couldn't stop.
Cedar Rapids went back to the lead for good at 3:30 of the third when Nikolai Mayorov scored in transition, holding off a defender to lift the puck over Logan Stein's left shoulder. Michael Suda added to the lead at 11:57, scoring with two seconds remaining on a RoughRider power play.
Jordan Tonelli sealed the result with an empty-netter from the neutral zone at 18:17.
With the season's longest road sequence at an end, the Black Hawks now prepare for five-in-a-row on home ice. The first two of those games are next Friday and Saturday against the Omaha Lancers during Waterloo's Hockey Fights Cancer Weekend. On both nights, the Hawks will wear special jerseys presented by Great Clips and the Breast Care Center, to be auctioned after Saturday's matchup, with profits benefitting Beyond Pink TEAM.
