BILOXI, MS - An error in the ninth inning proved costly as the Biloxi Shuckers (9-7) dropped their series opener 7-4 to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (7-9) on Tuesday night at MGM Park.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the ninth, RHP Lucas Erceg (L, 0-1) entered for the Shuckers. The righty walked the lead-off batter but struck out Ray-Patrick Didder and induced a lineout from Victor Victor Mesa to get to two outs. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Paul McIntosh hit a ball down the left-field line that fell in and out of the glove of Noah Campbell in left, allowing all three runners to score on the error to give Pensacola a 6-3 lead. The Wahoos would tack on an extra run on an RBI single from Griffin Conine.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Ashton McGee led off the frame with a solo home run to right, his first of the year, bringing the Shuckers' within a trio. Jakson Reetz nearly went back-to-back with McGee on a rope double off the left field wall, but RHP Colton Hock recovered and retired the final three hitters in order.
As they did in Birmingham, the Shuckers jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Luis Urias worked a one-out walk before Garrett Mitchell was hit by a pitch, putting two men on for Joey Wiemer, who doubled to left to drive in Urias and put Biloxi up 1-0. A Felix Valerio sacrifice fly plated Mitchell, and Wiemer raced in to score on a throw when Thomas Dillard stole second, vaulting the Shuckers to a 3-0 advantage.
Pensacola got a pair back in the top of the fourth on an error and a two-run homer by Luis Aviles Jr, his third of the season. RHP Arnaldo Hernandez (BS, 1) pitched a scoreless sixth but surrendered a game-tying home run to Jerar Encarnacion in the seventh.
The Shuckers series against the Wahoos continues on Wednesday night at MGM Park. RHP Tyler Herb (1-1, 2.92) is tabbed to start for the Shuckers opposite RHP Cody Mincey (0-0, 5.40) for a 6:35 PM first pitch. The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard locally on WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 or online here.
