Sussex County Miners News Release
POMONA, NY - Despite a solid start by Michael Suk, the Sussex County Miners fell to the Rockland Boulders on Wednesday night at Provident Bank Park. The Miners (30-47) committed two crucial errors in the seventh inning and lost, 3-1.
The ballgame was tied going into the bottom of the seventh and Suk (4-2) was cruising. The right-hander had not given up a run since the first inning and he recorded the first two outs of the inning. Suk then got Charlie Law to hit a grounder to third base that should have ended the inning, but Devin Thaut's throw to first was low and the ball skipped past Jon Talley. Law moved up to second on the error and the inning remained alive.
After the error, Suk hit Steve Nyisztor with an 0-2 pitch and the Boulders (52-27) had runners on first and second with two outs. Alex DeBellis hit a chopper up the middle and the ball took a high hop on Rey Otero, who was playing second base for the first time this season as an emergency fill-in. The ball bounced off of Otero's glove and into centerfield, allowing Law to score the go-ahead run. Otero chased down the ball in shallow center and made a desperate throw to third in an effort to throw out Nyisztor. The throw skipped off of Thaut and Nyisztor scampered home on the throwing error to give the Boulders a 3-1 lead.
Sussex County threatened to come back in the ninth. Thaut, Otero and Jayson Hernandez hit three consecutive one-out singles against Rockland closer Luis Sanz to load the bases. Jamal Austin pinch ran for Otero, but Sanz prevented him from scoring the tying run. Cory Morales hit a pop up down the left field line that shortstop Junior Arrojo ran down. Sanz then struck out Brady Wilson to end the ballgame and nail down his 16th save.
Suk pitched a tremendous game, but was done in by the Miners' seventh-inning errors and took the loss. The right-hander allowed just one earned run and held the Boulders to four hits over seven innings. Suk struck out one and walked one. Both runs against Suk in the seventh inning were unearned.
Boulders starter Alex Gouin earned the win. Like Suk, he allowed just one earned run over seven innings. Gouin (7-2) gave up six hits, walked one and struck out four.
The Miners' only run came in the second inning when Hernandez hit a game-tying sacrifice fly that scored Kenny Bryant, who returned for his first game back from the disabled list. Rockland scored the first run of the game on a solo home run by Stephen Cardullo in the first inning.
Sussex County has dropped the first two games of the three-game series at Rockland. The series finale is Thursday night at Provident Bank Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
